ALABAMA!!

Spoke with a lady yesterday at the nail salon who lives near shades crest road. She said her neighbor has chickens and even has a rooster. I guess it just depends on whether your neighbors complain or not.

Do any of ya'll feed your birds organic feed. If so, where do you get it from?

Right now i am ordering from countryside organics but the shipping cost is eating me alive.

I would be willing to drive 4-5 hours to a mill or feed store to buy in bulk but i have looked and cannot find any around.

I live in Mobile.

thanks

Hey Bamagirl0502 I'm also from Harvest and new to the chicken world. I have 5 Plymouth Barred Rocks pullets. I got them 2 weeks ago and they are now 22 weeks old. I got them for eggs and poop. They've mastered the poop part but I think the move from a big open yard with a large flock to a 36sf chicken tractor and run has stressed them a little. But they're being well fed and talked to and encouraged every day and they seem to be settling into the routine around here. I've found feathers in the nest box twice. Should be soon.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to BYC.

Welcome kwoody88 and Bamagirl0502!!

I live in Hoover and called the city offices before I ordered the chicks. They kind of laughed at me of course, but said that I could have as many as I wanted, even
a rooster, but that I should check the neighborhood covenants (none, b/c we live in one of the older sections) and warn the neighbors first. I had already done
both of those. My neighbors think I'm a little kooky, but we don't have a rooster, and four hens don't make any more noise than some of the dogs around here.

I don't live in Huntsville but if I did I would definitely pull this funny little prank on your mom. That would be hilarious!

As to the breeds, I've had good luck with Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps being friendly and easy to handle.
A friend of mine in Tennessee has a white Americauna and some Silkies that she just loves.

Good luck and congrats to your mother on her retirement. May it be long and happy!

Karen
