Hello! I'm from Anchorage, Alaska. I am new to chickens; I got 7 straight-run Marans/EE mix chicks in March. They were bred for cold-hardiness and egg size/color by a local breeder. 3 of those chicks turned out to be roos, and we couldn't keep them due to a city ordinance. (Very sad for me!) We got two 3-4 month old red sexlinks this past week. I have a very understanding husband who humored me in getting chicks and now finds the chickens hilarious. We have 2 children, ages 8 and 7, who are enjoying keeping chickens with me. I'm excited to be a part of BYC!

The reds are Zelda and Carrots, the black girls are Mrs. Featherbottom, Tulip, Annabel Lee and Waffles.

Thank you for all the links! I'll be perusing these tonight! :)

Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

You might also consider Chanticleers - a breed originated in Canada to handle the weather extremes and they DO!!

:frow Hello and :welcome

It's fantastic to have you join the flock! Sorry to hear that you had some roosters that couldn't stay.
I started with EEs have ended up mixing Marans into the mix.:highfive:
I've been incredibly pleased with their cold hardiness. The Marans with their straight combs have exceeded my expectations.

Best of luck with your flock! :thumbsup

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Aww...your babies are adorable! :love Definitely dig up your state thread of Alaska. Lots of others in your area that can help you deal with your local climate and all it has to offer!

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our roost! :)

Thank you, everyone! I will definitely check out the Alaska thread. I don't know many other chicken keepers in person, so online would be great!

KikisGirls, I'm glad that wasn't you with the sick chicks!
