Hi all! Country girl living in the city here for about 14 years. Excited to possibly be getting some chickens! My goal is three hens. We would like to incubate eggs for a homeschool project. But don't know where is best to get said eggs. We would like Austrolorps for heat/cold tolerance, friendliness and adaptability to some confinement. We have a yard they can run around in and I found some collapsible runs about 6'x 3' and a 5'x3' coop with attached small run. If we can't find eggs, we can do chicks but we would rather buy local. Any pointers will be much appreciated!!
 
Welcome! Glad you joined!

While bought coops and runs are convenient, they are often way too small, not just in square ft, but also in height. Depending on the age(s) of your child(ren), building can be a mathematical treasure trove, as well as teaching life skills with a hammer and drill.

Welcome to BYC nice to meet you. I find that my local Facebook poultry groups have a lot of trading of fertile eggs, chicks, etc. all year long.

I am thinking my parents can take them until they are big enough to process. Is have to find someone to process them. I don't know if people want cockerels for their flock especially ones they would have to integrate. If you have an idea I'm all ears!

Thank you for the link, I was trying to find how to find local posts! The coop I found is about 15 square feet including the nesting boxes. I've seen places say 2 sq ft per bird but that seemed way to small. So this would be about 5sq ft per hen but that does include the nesting boxes. That doesn't include the open air metal mesh run below it though. I was thinking of setting the whole thing on cement slabs to keep the mud away a bit and make it easier to clean. Please let me know if this doesn't sound like a good plan! Unfortunately I don't have the skills to build a coop and lumber is expensive these days!
