Hi,
I'm new at backyard chicken farming and after reading extensively on this forum I think it would be best for me to start with adult birds. I'd like to buy 2 to 4 hens, preferably Rhode Island Reds although Easter Eggers would be cute as a backup plan. Young, started laying hens would be ideal, but pullets old enough to live in a coop and run would be OK too. I've replied to a few ads here and posted on Craig's List and other forums, so I'm talking to several people and looking for the best option.
I'm not in a big hurry to get the birds and am willing to wait until I find an option that is safe and practical. These chickens will be pampered egg-laying pets who will enjoy 6 feet of coop space apiece plus a sizable outdoor run with a tree, indoor and outdoor perches, and lots of greens from my organic garden.
I'd prefer not to ship the birds due to the heat. But I'm willing to drive up to 8 hours one-way to pick the hens up and bring them back in my car.
Does anyone know where I could get some nice pullets or laying hens?
Thanks,
R.A. Williams
