I have nothing but good things to say about Alchemist. On my first order, she included 4 extra birds - they’ve all turned out to be pullets.I know this is an old thread but I’m still upset about the ethical of the farm. I did not have a good experience with Alchemist. I ordered ten chicks and Francesca gave me one free chick which I already suspected it would be a boy. So, anyway, I ended up with seven boys out of the eleven chicks I got from her. Four of which are: 2 cream Legbars and 2 OE back crosses.
One of the chicks I ordered was a Welsummer and if you know a thing or two about Welsummer, they are kinda auto-sexing and of course I got a boy instead. I also ordered four Black copper Marans and only two were (boys) and the other two are OE xOE instead because the egg colors I got from the two confirmed my suspicion. I would think twice about buying from a no-kill farm because those roosters at the end had to end up in someone’s home. Unless you love having a high rooster ratio in your coop.
I just got my second order today and she gave me 7 extra birds. Obviously it’s too soon to tell how many will be cockerels, but I’ve bought sexed females from hatcheries who have ended up being males. If dealing with cockerels is an issue for you, buy started pullets.
If you bought one straight-run Welsummer expecting a pullet, that’s not Franchesca’s fault. They are not reliably auto-sexing and she doesn’t sell them as such.
I’m new to chickens and I’ve already learned that when you’re dealing with small numbers (2-3 chicks per breed), the odds are often not 50/50. I got 9 chicks (4 different breeds) from Sadie Girl and 7 have ended up being roosters. Now I order at least 4 per breed to increase my odds of getting at least one pullet.
On Franchesca’s site, she says to reach out if you end up with all males and she’ll make it right. I’m certain she would also want to make it right if you received the wrong breed in error.
Have you contacted her?
