I have a 1.5 year old Chanticleer hen. One week ago she was 'waddling' weirdly, and kept losing her balance, as if she was drunk. I actually wondered if she overdosed on an over-ripe, fermented apple in our orchard. It hasn't gotten any better - but it also hasn't gotten any worse.
I checked to see if she was egg bound - nope, nothing up there. I figured by now that if it was some type of toxin, she'd be gone. But she's eating & drinking, and is strong enough to fly up to the roost - but after a while she loses her balance and falls off. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen in a chicken. I'm perplexed.

Has she molted recently or does she normally lay eggs? Apple seeds can be toxic, as are a lot of things if eaten in excess. Have you added any new chickens to the flock recently? Was she vaccinated for Mareks disease? Does one leg feel weaker than the other, and is there any curling under of the toes? I would make sure that she is close to food and water. Let us know if anything changes.

She has just come off a molt, and she normally lays. No new chickens added, no toe curling, no weird neck movements. Her legs equally affected; its as if she has little coordination in them. She was not vaccinated for Marek's, but none of my girls were (30 hens), and this is the first I've ever seen anything like this.

I would give 1/4 tablet daily of crushed human B complex daily for awhile to see if there is any improvement. Do you have a rooster that might have hurt her back, or could she have suffered a fall?

No Rooster, although some of the older hens can be a bit rough at times....
