I have read that some people feed their chickens alfa, is that a pellet? What does everyone feed thier chickens in the winter when thier gardens are gone for better yolk color? I give them laying pellets but thier eggs yolks are very pale....anyone?

You can feed alfalfa pellets (not rabbit feed) or some of us get the freeze dried alfalfa cubes for horses. I give my girls about a quart container full every couple days. I put them in a container & cover them with water until they get soft, then dump off the excess water & throw them in the run for them to scratch & pick thru. They eat the leaves and leave the hard stems. The cubes & pellets are hard if you don't wet them. I just bought my bag today at TSC, because I saw they had gone from $9.99-11.99, so I didn't want them to go up any higher. The 50lb. bag will last all winter. You can also get a bale of alfalfa hay, but I have no where to store that, so I buy the dehydrated stuff.

I buy alfalfa pellets for the horse and goat. They are pretty big, about the size of a large vitamin. Maybe too large for standard chickens.

I also buy cubed alfalfa. They could peck those apart and eat them better.

thanks guys that helps alot!!! the things we do for our girls:love
