Alfalfa Hay

Yeah, they really like kicking through it and eating all the green leaves. Mine leave behind the stems, which makes a bit of a mess but some good mulching.
I think fresh flakes of Alfalfa hay are better nutritionally and taste-wise than the bagged cubes and such.
But I have had a hen get Stridor (stuck food causing wheezing and distressing noises). It was from a green, bendy stem of alfalfa she tried to swallow. It cleared right up after a night on the roost with her head hanging down as they tend to do.

I buy the Standlee brand chopped, bagged alfalfa and provide it to my girls in small handfulls a few times a week. They like to peck and scratch and pick out their own pieces.
