I give mine regular grass hay to pick around in. Alfalfa works as well.

I do. I put some under raised coops or in pen during winter when greens are scarce. GC

No, it's too expensive. I use rice straw or bean straw. It has remnants of rice or beans and the chickens love to scratch through it. I use it to give them something to do and it makes a nice bedding in the uncovered portion of the run in the rain. Helps to keep the mud at bay. Rice straw is $3 a bale and alfalfa hay costs $14 a bale!!
