Sorry to sound stupid, but what kind of bedding is that? Does it work well? We figure there MUST be something better than shavings.

ETA: Your chicks all look happy and healthy. This was a cool story. Loved it!

I'm not the OP, but it looks like horse pellets to me. Basically it's pine sawdust that's compressed into a pelleted form (pretty much the same thing as you put in a pellet stove, but formulated a little differently and marketed for animal bedding). You can find them at TSC and other feed stores easily.
 
Bedding looks like the stuff for our wood pellet stove. We too use that instead or in addition to shavings. We figure it absorbs liquid and breaks down as needed into sawdust. Haven't had any problems with it.

A Blue Wheaten Ameraucana

It is horse pellets/wood pellets - $6 a bag or a bit less at any feed store - I like them better than shavings.​
