Lol good points. When my dad butchered my roosters I told myslef I would NEVER eat them... I just don't like the thought of eating my OWN chickens. And ILLIA BO's and RIR I guess are really used for meat (Roosters) and for the eggs (Hens) . Just making a guess.

I don't own Buff Orpingtons or Rhode Island Reds.

I'm just saying. . . If a thread is ALL ABOUT those breeds it should include the fact that about 90% of all of them in the US are no longer what they once were. Now, they look nearly identical in body type and also in weight, and are bred solely for mass egg production. Plus, it should enlighten people into what the breed naturally should look like. Buff Orpingtons are know for being HUGE fluffy birds, not medium sized, normal looking buff colored hens. Rhode Island Reds should be known for their nice brick-like large size, gorgeous nearly iridescent blood red coloration, and roots in being able to feed a farmer, not feed a commercialized egg industry.


But honestly, would you still rather eat a huge corporation's Cornish X birds, bred to grow so fast they can't live beyond 1 yr unless under extremely strict diets, housed in conditions without natural sunlight or air, and butchered at only 1-2 months old?

There are people who are willing to sell you their pastured, naturally raised dual purpose chicken if you don't want to eat your own.

I'd rather know my food lived a good life and was loved and taken care of with respect, even if it meant I had to do the deed myself.​

I very much take great care my chickens including my BO and RIR, I don't butcher at all and my dad let our roosters live good and healthy lives. And I guess you do make a point.. but yet the meat is tough if you butcher them when they're 6 months old.

I have a dozen BO pullet biddies coming the first week of April from a hatchery-I can't wait-I picked them for the eggs,meat,cold tolerance and most of all the docility-----and they are beautiful--I can't wait to get them---the pics are great!!!

This one was taken trying to get a good picture of my Old English hen, but she moved.. Only kept it because Butterball was looking over her shoulder like, "Umm, excuse me..I'm back here!"
