Hello! I'm a mother of 4. My oldest just turned 10, my next one is 8, and my little ones are 11.5 months apart at 2 and 3. We have 1 dog, 3 cats, and 11 chickens! We are new to this lifestyle and loving it. My husband and I have both always wanted a little homestead for our family and we were finally able to take the first step by buying a home on 1.5 acres this past Christmas. Our little property is completely surrounded by 3 large properties, making us feel as if we are truly out in the country, but Walmart is only about 5 minutes away. Neighbor #1 has a property that is part wooded, part farm, with fields that rotate wheat and cotton. Neighbor #2 is a horse breeder. And neighbor #3 has 4 horses, 4 donkeys, 3 ducks, and 25 goats! We really love it here. This is our paradise. Our project for this spring has been chickens. We finished our coop and are putting the finishing touches on the run. For now the chickens are free ranging and we plan to continue allowing that, so the run is for occasional use. We only planned on 6 chickens, but due to my lack of discipline, I gave in to their cuteness several more times on trips to the feed store and we ended up with 11. 5 of them were straight run, but it looks like every single one is a hen. I was really wanting 1 rooster :/ Every single one of our girls are a different breed and I'm especially in love with my Dominique! We also planted two apple trees this spring, as well as 3 blueberry bushes, and some strawberries. If all goes well, next year we'll do a vegetable garden, and I'll get a couple of goats! This is truly the life :)

Welcome to BYC! My children, and now my granddaughter love to make pets our chickens. What breeds do you have other than your Dominique? Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC!

Congrats on the new property! Nothing better than some country living. Wow, you got lucky on your straight run, getting all pullets. But you are probably better off with out a rooster. Some of them can be a big pain in the you know what!

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!
