The same sort of thing happened to me once, but there was no one around to stop the dog. It was my landlady's lab, and he had chewed his way out of his kennel. Yep, a chainlink kennel. He broke a tooth while he was at it. Two thirds of my flock were lost, and a couple injured. Didn't find one of the live birds until the next day. She was hiding under a bush and couldn't get back out of it. I had to trim away some of the branches to get to her. The next weekend my dad and brother drove up (a 5 hr drive) and helped me build a small run for my chickens. After that I only let them free range for a few hours on my days off from work so I could keep an eye on them. About a month later, I caught the dog in the yard again, just as he was finishing off one of my two turkeys. I was furious! Not much you can do but complain a little when it's your landlady's dog. And, no, she didn't offer to pay for anything or take some off of my rent. Not nice.

In other words, I do know how you feel. For me, as soon as I was able to start taking measures to protect the rest of my babies, I was then able to start feeling a little better. Hope that works for you, too.

I wish I could just send you splash orp eggs, but I don't have any hatching eggs yet, not any, but if you give me your address, I might share something very special from my flock which will be laying in a few months, that is if you have an incubator.....

You might want to offer some "dog on a chain tips".
use two collars instead of one. Use a threaded quick link with lock tight and tightened with a pliers. Put it on the collar that would be closer to the shoulders. leather and nylon to a degree will stretch. Put the collars on tight- too tight is when the dog has trouble breathing, coughing, gagging, etc, (but as a result of wearing the collars, not as a result of trying to pull out of the collars. He'll recover from that and learn. When you want to take the dog for a walk or in the house you unhook the whole collar and use the second collar. Then reattach the chained collar when your putting him out. After initially putting the collars on correctly- check them for stretch the next couple of day. You'd be amazed at how much a dog can stretch a 1 inch leather collar. Use a chain that is adequate for the dog and a tie down that is well built. Good luck and keep up the great attitude. I just lost a hen last week and I know how you feel. Your raise them from babies and its hard to lose them. I didn't want to let them out of the barn again. I'm sorry for your loss.

I don't know what I would do if I found out it was a dog. I told my DH I was going to put an add in the paper stating, any cats found on my property killing my birds will be considered wild animals and shot on the spot. DH said I couldn't do that.

My neighbor has 15 cats to date and lets them all run wild.

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope the neighbor will be reasonable and at least make sure that the dog is confined. It maybe time for a kennel for that one. One with dig proof walls.
