Sadly my entire flock of chicks turned out to be cockerels. Even the ones I bought as “pullets.” Oh well. Next year I’ll have to start over. I’m thinking of taking the plunge and buying some quality hatching eggs rather than going the hatchery root.

What really makes me sad is that I’ve grown attached to all these sweet boys and I really don’t want them to end up in the wrong hands (cockfighting is an issue here). I don’t even mind if they get eaten anymore but it’s really hard to figure out peoples intentions when they inquire. Not many people are inquiring either so I might just have to drop them off at the feed store next week because they’re beginning to get rowdy.

Why not caponize them?

Ofcourse that makes them stop crowing. A copone doesn't crow. It also makes them taste better. I have castrated hundreds of cockerels in last 9 years, all my extra cockerels end up getting caponized.

I think that if you would start a how-to thread or article on caponizing, with photos.....a lot of people would be interested in learning to do this.

Are you absolutely positive they are all boys? I had a batch of silkies fool me and others this year and I have had a lot of chickens. These are my first silkies though.

Ooooh, is that a blue laced red wyandotte? He is really pretty! Those seem hard to come by around here. Maybe you can rehome him. Maybe someone will give you a little $ for him. I think there is a rehoming forum.

@goldysgirl All but one were roosters. I found homes for the silkie and the BLRW (had quite a few people inquire about that one) but the rest had to be culled due to excessive crowing and not one inquiry.
I bit the bullet and bought some black copper marans from a breeder, and also got some Meyer hatchery pullets so that I have some other egg colors too.
