all who are hatching quail

AWESOME! I love a full brooder!! This was your first hatch too was it not? It sounds like you did well either way.... Your hatch is drawing to a end.... You may get another or two hatch but you will start to see curled toes and defects in the very late ones. IMHO, by tomorrow at this time I would call it done. After a day of no hatches I throw the rest out. I will bet a soda that the majority of them hatched in 4 hr window and those are all healthy chicks. Then there was likely a smaller wave a few hrs later.... The tail end is usually where the weak ones tend to be. Its like they time their entrance to arrive in force.... Good luck with your new birds!

You seem to know a lot about quail! I have a question. I bought my first batch of hatching eggs online. I want to start small, maybe 4 or so quail at first. Just to get the hang of it. The minimum I could order was 12. I figure I'll incubate 6 just in case some don't hatc so my question is, what do I do with the rest? Store them long term, throw them in the skillet? Can you even eat fertilized eggs? Gosh, I feel like a noob :)

Typically, only about 50% of shipped eggs will actually hatch. Theoretically, if you set all 12, about six will hatch...three boys, three girls..THEORETICALLY! With my luck, ten would hatch and they'd be all Roos!

I'd set all 12... If you get a couple extra, eat em!

Oh geez, getting all males would totally be my luck too! But good call on eating them. Hadn't thought of that! The beauty of Coturnix is I'd have freezer-ready quail within a couple months! Thanks for the insight!

I'm on day 15 today for my button quails. I have 6 eggs in my homemade incubator. I have 3 different temp readers in it the incubator. It's sitting at 60% humidity and 99.5 -100 degrees.

My female button quail has just gone broody about a week ago. She is sitting on 7 eggs today. There seems to be a new egg each day. She'll sit on them for most of the day (moves off to eat and drink or preen her feathers), but she won't sit on them during the night. She just covers them up with bedding. She chatters to the male when he come near her while she sits on them. I provided her a nest box, but she prefers the outside corner of the nest box.

What I do if my feed store doesn't have the right protein percentage is, I go out and buy some dry cat food and the highest protein Gamebirds food I can find and put both in the blender and turn it into powder. They will eat it right up. I also would recommend wood shavings, you would just need to change it every week or so if you don't want it to smell to bad, or don't just keep adding my on. Hope this helps

Here we go again. 120 bob eggs in the bator, the other bator is locked down, and due to hatch tomorrow. 6 week old chicks in brooder went out in the new johnny house. The cycle continues. lol An empty bator or brooder is a rare thing around here these days.
