I get severe asthma when I spend too much time around most animals, but, so far, have only had a little sniffle when I handle birds. Allergy shots did nothing for me, so avoidance is best. Or, sometimes taking allergy meds might work a little.
If you aren't getting severely ill enough, already, then you're probably going to be OK. I agree with using a mask when cleaning out the pens/cages. Even if you're not allergic it would be a good idea.
