Allergy Shots. Anyone Get Them?

Quote:
No, never had my nose broken. I have no idea why I smell so good. I have a "bionic" nose. You smell of it, and I can smell it. And it seems to get worst and worst as I get older. Having a keen sense of smell is not a good thing to have.

What's a Sentinel?

I had them for close to 5 years. Mine where every week and i had to get 2 shots each time. They made the world of difference for me! I was able to be taken off all my medications and was not sick nearly as much. They tapered me of them. Like every week for 2 years then every other week then every 3 weeks to once a month then i was done. Simple as that. They truly did help me though.

My husband takes allergy shots and has for almost 4 years now. His allergies are intense and debilitating, he had to be started at such a diluted dose he is just now getting up to the normal starting dose of most people. So far he has not seen any improvement, but we knew he wouldn't for years b/c his dose was so low to start w/ and even then he reacted to the doses. We knew going in , b/c we have a great Dr. who let us know up front the good, bad, and ugly we could expect, that best case senerio he has a 1/3 chance of drastic improvement, and 1/3 chance of slight improvement, and a 1/3 chance of no change at all. In addition to the weekly shot cost (not bad after insurance) he has a 1 hr. drive each way to get the shots once a week for 4 years so far, but for us the chance at improvement was worth it. (His eyes are always swollen and red, watering, even the skin of the whites of his eyeballs swell like a blister on his eyeballs, his sinuses are always swollen shut, his lungs are tight and painful to breath most of the year, he is refractory to all over the counter medications and most prescribed meds) It is almost impossible for him to work in his profession.

So IMHO, if your allergies are interfering w/ your life, you have nothing to loose w/ the shots, but if they are managable w/ other non serious or expensive means then by all means use those. Some who take the shots have no choice like a previous poster said it's a choice to breath or not.

If anyone does choose the shots go through an allergy specialist, and chose one that isn't shot happy, not everyone w/ allergies needs shots. I have mild airborn allergies (from dust and pollen) and would never consider taking the shots. However I have intense reactive airway to chemicals, cold air, cardio exercise, laughter, sadly no shots will help that.

I used to take allergy shots and it did help reduce the number of hospital and emergency room stays, but it was not a cure. The only way to significantly reduce my allergies was to give up having pets and limit my time with other animals. That is hard to do, so I did find that Claritin helped a lot. Still not a cure, but it alleviates it enough so that I can at least visit a house that has an indoor cat for a few hours or enjoy a few hours horseback riding. I just take it when I know I'm going somewhere where I will be interacting with animals. So far, birds haven't bothered my allergies enough to be any problem, though I have had an allergic reaction to them.

I know that I need to eliminate dairy. hit

Not necessarily, a lot of people with dairy allergies can drink whole organic or goats milk, the allergy part is usually related back to what the cows ate or were given as hormones or antibiotics. People don;t know that many dairy herds are fed all sorts of crap they should not have, to make them produce more milk. Maybe there forage was sprayed with a chemical fertilizer or pesticide who knows, but it usually is not the milk in the real sense of the word, all mammals grow up on milk, to be allergic to the real thing would be a death sentence.
I also believe that the allergy tests are garbage, not because I don't believe in DR's, but because common sense tells me anything foreign injected or put in us will make the body react/ reject that foreign material, as too why so many are tested and allergic to so many different things. Like my son, he is not allergic to anything that the skin test said he was allergic too.......... but every dam site swelled up with a big ole lump......
I really think sometimes that our medical professionals have lost all common sense, and never look past what the book says!!
I would at least try a natural professional first before subjecting my body to all the unwanted chemical preservatives in any shots. like mercury, or tri something ? merisol? maybe, but there are lots of others used these days as well.
As for the ones taking the shots and seeing benefits, I'm glad it is helping, but in the long run will it make you better or worse with something else you didn't know about like cancer or something. Because many of the chemicals added to the shots are proven to be carcinogens. Each person has the right to do as they please with there health treatments but the ones who stay healthy usually do not make a decision based souley on the doctors advice, but searched around for info first, on the best options.
Too many people these days just take for granted that what the doctors say is the almighty gospel and there is no other treatment. 99.9 percent of the time there is an alternative medicine that will work as well and not give you side effects or future problems.

I've been taking (having?) them for a few years now (according to the test I'm allergic to almost everything), I really can't say they are doing anything. I currently get 3 every other week (they spread them out more as you go along), they sting like any other shot and which ever arm gets two shots tends to bruise/get red. They actually made my step-mom more allergic, to the point where the shots where causing a major allergic reaction so she had to stop having them.
