I've been nosing about the site for a while but just now joined. I live in Tennessee, and have a backyard flock of 14 hens.
8 Rhode Island Reds
3 Silver-laced Wyandotte
2 Buff Orpington
1 Australorp.

and 6 Ducks
5 Indian Runners
1 Pekin

Bought them at the local Rural King in January, now they're quite handsome looking birds. I was dubious about getting them, but my husband decided it was something that he wanted to do.. so, he built the coop and the pen, bought the chicks.. and promptly deployed to Afghanistan leaving me to figure all this out on my own @.@

Looking forward to reading up on every subject that comes up that confuses the heck out of me

Cheers! My husband has been in the navy for 25 years, I know just how you feel. Every time he goes away I cross my fingers that there will be no major dramas with the animals or the kids.

thanks to your husband for his time in service. Yes, isn't that like a man to start something and leave the wife to figure it out? You are in good hands here, we've got your back. You've got questions -we've got the answers. If you go to the "where am I, where are you," forum you can find and post on your state thread. Someone may even be in your local area who can give detailed info for your climate, best places to get feed, etc.
