Allowing different types of chickens to breed together?...

The rooster in my avatar is a Brahma/EE cross. He's at least as big as his father was, and that was a pretty good sized bird.
Gorgeous! Could I possibly be lucky enough to get a Brahma sized hen with Brahma temperament that lays tinted eggs?

That's what I am hoping for!!

You should get some fun ( and cute) mixed breed chicks! I once had an Ameraucana roo that got into the silkie pen. I didn't think he would try breeding them, but I ended up getting a few Ameraucana/silkie crosses that were adorable. They had regular feathers instead of the silkie "fluff" , feathered legs and feet, and the cutest tuft of feathers on their heads.

Greetings all: I just ordered my first ever batch of chickens and the same questions occurred to me. I decided to just say to heck with it and go with it and see what will happen. I ordered 8 hens and one roo of each of the following: Black Australorp, Buff Orps, New Hampshires, and White Wyandottes. I don't intend to separate them (unless I end up with cock fights), and hope for good eggs, good meat, and hopefully down the road, chicks to perpetuate the flock :) The chicks won't be with me till the last week of May, so it'll be quite a while before I get eggs or have to worry about breeding. I am so looking forward to this entire adventure! :)

If anyone has any suggestions, recommendations or words of wisdom to share, I'd love to hear them!

Years ago, my Brahma hens were with my Blue Orpington rooster, Suede. The Lt. Brahma's eggs were fertile but would never develop so there was some chemical incompatibility between her and Suede. Caroline's eggs (Buff Brahma) produced many beautiful chicks. Males were huge like draft horse chickens, lol. They were black or blue with gold in their hackles, chests, saddles and wing bows. Females were solid black or blue with slightly feathered legs and pea combs and very sweet and good mothers.

Here is one of the Blue Orp x Buff Brahma pullets produced, my Glenda. We kept her. She died suddenly of some accident we never figured out. She raised babies and was a great broody, sweet hen.

Here is her brother, named by a friend "Sherman" for Sherman Tank, lol. Those chicks he's with are all the same age. He was HUGE.

Thank you! They are a very nice cross, IMO. Someone who hatched some decided he'd even breed them. I was looking for a photo of a mature rooster out of Suede and Caroline and I may yet find it. They're impressive!
