I'v got a small batch of freedom rangers in my basement, they're a little over a week old. A few days ago they started jumping on top of their waterer, I was wondering if they would roost. also whether it would be safe for their legs etc to allow them too. it would be a huge help if they did ounce they go outside if they do so they could evade predators better.

Starting them early on roost would help their joints develop better. Gives them something to do.... ect. However keep them low because the impact of them coming down may hurt their legs. Even my DP Buckeyes have low roost to help them jump down as it's tough on them to jar their legs since they are not as graceful as a smaller breed. Also keep the roost wide so they do not develop breast blisters. 2x4's work great.

I have a 1x3 roost a few inches off the ground in my Ranger pen. Some of the four-week olds get on it while they are moving around, but they always sleep in groups on the ground.

I also have some five-month olds (not rangers) that refuse to use a roost at night.

thanks, i think i'm just gonna forgo the whole roosting thing since it wouldn't be high enough to be of any help against predators.
