Welcome, neighbor to the north. Are you in the mountains of NC? If so, you will have more "winter" than the rest of the State. My advice is go big with the coop. As @DobieLover says "twice as big as you think you need". Truly, that is the way to think. And if you think you may have a chicken math problem, I would go three times bigger. If you cannot build, converting a shed is a great option. You will just need to add roosting bars, a chicken door, a hardware cloth apron, and improve ventilation. All of these things this group can guide you through completing.
