almost flipped out at work--UPDATE

That's bullying, plain and simple.

I understand how you feel. According to my in-laws we are stupid about chickens too. We don't care though....cause we love them. They are our pets and part of our family and they give us a great amount of pleasure. When my MIL wanted to have our chickens, my DH said no because they wouldn't pick the chickens up and hold them every day. Some people see animals as just a thing and others don't. Be proud of yourself that your chickens have a wonderful home with a person who cares so much about them.

Rule number one for employees: the boss is always right. Always keep that in mind.

The others are laughing because she is the boss. It doesn't mean they think she is funny or that you are dumb.

I suggest you teach yourself to say "What a good idea." then go home and raise your chickens any way you want to.

I would never discuss poultry at work. If the boss ask about your birds, simply say that your spouse has taken over and you don't know what is going on with them, nor do you care.

Your boss's behavior is really inappropriate. Keep smiling and start looking for a new job in your free time. This is not a good economy, so it is not a good time to quit without another job lined up. Be pleasant, work hard so you can get a good reference.

When looking for a new job never ever, not ever, say anything bad about your old boss. Just say you are hoping to find a more interesting job, or it's time to learn a new job skill, or you are hoping to find something closer to home, or you need better health coverage for your family. Think of a reason that doesn't make you look like a complainer or a malcontent type of employee.

Best luck to you.

Always remember you have friends, and you have co-workers (including bosses), but they're not always the same people. No more discussing home stuff at work. Period.

Can you elaborate why commercial feed is not the best route? I'm a complete newbie and was led to believe that commercial feed (as in purina etc) was the end-all and i shouldn't be feeding my chickens anything else?

Confused.

IMO it's fine. Some people want to mix their own ration (which requires a lot of knowledge of the individual ingredients and their needs for them, or a lot of research) or have the feed store mix them up a custom blend. We have that option here but for certain reasons having nothing to do with nutrition we buy the commercial feed. I would guess that the vast majority of people with chickens use commercial feeds and they do fine on it.

Perhaps someone should point out the fact that these are YOUR chickens and you can do as you please. If you want to teach them to eat at the dinner table, and dress them in tutu's that is YOUR business! Geez! Where do people get off telling others how to raise their animals and their kids anyway?

Can you imagine how miserable and insecure your boss must be that she has to belittle people just to make herself feel better? How sad. It's unfortunate that you have her as your boss. You must be the bigger person as you know you are for not letting her have it. I know it's easier said than done but, she really isn't worth worrying about. Try to keep a stiff upper lip. There's a lot of jerks in this world.

Unfortunately, some people are just stupid and mean. You usually can't fix stupid and mean. Sorry that this happened to you, it's especially hard when it is someone that has authority over you and takes advantage of it.

There's a lot of good advice from some smart people on her that I would definitely follow:

Keep notes of when she does this, smile and try to keep your personal life to yourself ( I know this is difficult if you work in close approximation to others ), and look for a job with a boss who values and respects you. Also... while you are smiling and listening to her ignorance, envision in your mind you kicking her on her tail feathers and your chickens attacking her while she's down. It'll help your smile look genuine.
