almost got scamed...by fake money orders

Good for you smelling a rat. It's very common to scam via MO or Certified Check these days. And if you are asked to cash it and pay someone else? Run away.

BTW, TTY calls are not always computer generated, so the person calling may not have a computer. All one has to do is talk to the "operator" as though speaking to the person on the other end directly.

What does a credit union have to do with it being a scam? I get the money orders and shipper, but why would you say mentioning a credit union means it's a scam?

I have gotten a lot of deaf calls. Always from Los Angeles Times ads. Usually the first call. I just tell the relay person a few different ways for the person to contact me, including snail mail, email, and decline the rest of the call. I never hear from them again.

I was once trying to buy a dog and have it shipped to me.. I found lots of breeders that would.. But they had no pups at the time.. I placed an add saying I was looking for a certain dog. I then got an email from some one saying they had one.. I asked how much.. I gave them my zip code only for shipping information to get a quote on shipping. Then I got an email saying that they were out of the country visiting family and they had the pups with them so it would be really expensive to ship.. I sent them an email saying that they were scammers and to be ashamed of themselves. They wrote back to me cussing.. There was other people looking for the same breed I was.. I warned them all about the email address that I was contacted with.. Some people replied back to me and said the same people contacted them with even different physical address. Scammers.. Geez get a life and a job..

My mom works at a bank and she had some guy arrested for trying to cash fake money orders. He must not have known that they were fake, or else it was one of those "stupid criminals" coz she just kept telling him there was delay, and he kept waiting for his money, until the cops got there!!!!!!!!
Not sure if he was just an innocent who got scammed, or if he was dumb enough to try to pull one over on a BANK employee, but GO MOM!!! lol

Because credit unions do not directly check the bank account before cashing out the money order. So, when the whole thing comes up fraud, the credit union will take the money from the person who cashed the check. I have heard of it happening through a bank as well, but MOST scammers will metion a credit union by name.

I can't tell you how many scam letters my aunt and I have gotten when trying to sell her mare.

Yep SCAM!!!

When I sold my dogs, at $1800 a pop, you better come pick it up, and you better have cash!

Hubby also got someone like that on CraigList for his old motorcycle to be shipped out to England. He thought hmmmmmm! Then this guy (the middleman) told him he will be sending a check for his client in England that wanted the bike. Sure ok, we waited and waited and the emails coming from them saying that they sent the MO and we kept saying no we did not get the check. No check, no bike. It went back and forth for a month and surely, we thought they were having problems with the shipper who was out in Chicago. They were demanding that we are to cash the check and send the mo to them in England. So we decided to play along thinking it is not going to go down well and turn the tables on them. The day before we got the actual check, they told us to go to the Western Union and pick up our check at the place we told them that is our nearest MO place. So we went down there and ask the Western Union to look up for our check. they said no, it has not come in but this lady's intitution as well as mine (hubby thinks he is getting a deal made grrrrrr) and she read his emails that we made copies and she said it sounds like a scam. LOLOL! I rubbed into my hubby saying TOLD YA! So the next day, we got their check which it came from a foreign car business man in Chicago!!!!! We submit the check to our bank, told them to do an investigation on this check and see if it is legit. Well less than two days later, the bank called us and said it is a fraud and the business car dealer in Chicago never wrote that check out, nor is business logo on it. Boy that dealer was mad! It is a good thing it protected all of us! The bank said there is nothing they can do to go after these scammers because they can not track it down and no one got their money robbed. The middleman was emailing hubby that day please cash it and send us the MO for the shipper! Over and over again! Hubby responded that we can not cash the check until the bank clears it which it would take a week, it really ticked off the middleman big time and threatened hubby for stealing the money. Yeah right! When we found out it was a scam, hubby turned around emailed the middleman saying the bank said this check he sent is a fraud and it would be sent to the FBI. We didnt hear anymore after that!

Then hubby relisted his motorcycle back on Craiglist and again another darn scammer doing the same stunt and hubby responded back he had this email before and they are scammers so better RUN because the FBI is on your tails LOLOL!

So hubby ended up listing his bike on Ebay and got very good results and happy owners all around.

Anything like that like sending money, SCAM!

As for the deafs, we use Relay systems which the operator MUST use their names and numbers and it does take time going back and forth in communicating. I used it alot in the past 15 years until my TDD gave up the ghost two years ago and they are very nice people and very respectful. They do not solice on their own but the deaf person is communicating to you, respond to them but any money transactions, tell them to use PayPal or send them the MO and make them wait for the clearance period so you do not get screwed with overdraft fees. Rarely we ever do this but yes, we do credit cards and so forth. However the TDD relay stations are getting less in numbers because many deaf people are now communicating by texting on cell phones but once in a while they will get someone to relay the information calls to a business. many times businesses think we are sales people and hang up on us and we had to call them right back again to let them know we are not sales people, just using relay operators to do our TDD to voice communication by phones.

Yes it is a good idea to use emails and texting because most of us deaf folks would have access to it IF you feel like the person you are speaking to on the phone is not valid. Rarely we ever had deaf people doing sales except to sell TDDs or phones such as Blackberrys. Most of the places like StarTek, they will NOT hire a deaf person to do their telemarketing, it takes up too much time over the phone line time. Tick, tick, tick.

Are you saying that a credit union is the one issuing the money order and that they take a personal check or something as payment for the money order? I worked in credit unions for many years and I would never take a personal check as payment for a money order. I either took the money directly from the account of the person, or they paid cash. And if I were to accept some other form of payment for some odd reason (which I never did and never would have), the person held responsible would be the one who bought the money order, not the person who ultimately tries to cash it.

I think she means that a credit union will credit your account with the funds faster than a bank. Whenever I take a check or MO to my credit union, they never hold it. I asked why and I was told that if you have the funds in another account or you are a long time customer in good standing, they are more likely to go ahead and fund the check or MO. Then if something goes wrong they can debit another account.
