My name is Laura and I'm a hatch-a-holic. (Welcome to my 12-step meeting!! LOL)
So I have several incubators going in my laundry room. Two have egg turners in them ... chugging along... and one is full of eggs at about Day 20. These eggs are ones that I bought for my son's third grade classroom so that we could hatch chicks and discuss the science of it all. Very exciting for them (and me:
) and this is the second year that I've done this. Anyway, the eggs came home with me over the weekend so that I can watch them and bring them in tomorrow, Monday, for day 21.
I went into my laundry room just now to check on those particular eggs and peered into the other two incubators to check humidity and temperature - like usual. I also have chicks in my laundry room chirping away... so at first it didn't register that I was hearing chirping from one of the other incubators...
... one with the egg turner still in it! ACK!
Those eggs were actually extras from the school project that I kept at home. I had them in an incubator... then tried them under a broody hen - who then perversely changed her mind about sitting on eggs - and so I stuck them back into the incubator. And promptly forgot about them... not even sure that they'd hatch since the hen had only sat on them for a bit... left them cold for a good while, too. In the back of my mind, I knew that I had to candle them soon... they must be getting close to day 18... but with my upcoming move and all the packing I'm doing, it sorta slipped out of my mind...
... You should have seen me rushing
to get the peeping eggs out of that egg turner, into egg cartons for hatching and back into the incubator just now! So far 5 of the 12 eggs had already pipped... two are zipping... Amazing!
I have 6 breeds that may hatch today - blue lace red wyandottes... black copper marans... bluff orpingtons... wheaten marans... blue ameracaunas... and some of my own giant frizzle cochins.
Don't know how I'll be able to concentrate on a thing all day!
