I'm so happy to find a forum that can help beginners like me. Growing up as a kid we had 3 RIR and I loved them and now that I have kids of my own I wanted them to experience the fun too! I was originally gonna start with just 3 RIR but then as I continued researching I had no idea there were so many different kinds of chickens and colored eggs! And thought how fun and exciting it would be for the kids to have a rainbow selection and know which chicken it came from 
So we decided on 1 White Leghorn, 1 Buff Orp, 1 RIR, 1 BCM, and 2 EE (hopefully one will lay blue or green eggs). I ordered two of each from Meyer Hatchery just in case something happened to one. And my friend wanted my extras to start her flock. I'm really glad I ordered two of each because one RIR was Doa 
and one leghorn looks like it came with mushy chick disease but so far she's still doing good they are 1 week old and already flying!
Can't wait to see what colors my EE's are going to be!! And to get my first eggs!! So eggcited
My husband fondly calls me chicken crazy because I've been chicken obsessed and love reading everything I can about chickens! We're just about done with the chicken coop... Next project, chicken garden
