Aloha and welcome to the forum!
I’m on the big island and we have to deal with mongoose, unfortunately daytime predators.
Whatever coop and run you decide, make sure you enclose the entire structure with minimum half inch by half-inch 19 gauge hardware cloth. This can be bought on Amazon usually for a decent price. It was the most expensive part of our coop. Mongoose can climb and dig and can get into small spaces. We also have a 12 inch skirt of hardware cloth around the entire structure as well, alternately you can dig hardware cloth down about 12 inches instead of doing an apron. So far this has worked well for us. Not even a mouse can get into our coop and run!
Good luck and enjoy your new chickens, many helpful people here on the forum feel free to ask any questions!![]()
Up mauka near Waimea. Would not live any where else at this point!Thank you so much for the advice! Very helpful. Will definitely make sure it’s enclosed. Initially wanted to have them free-range, but not possible as we won’t be outside to watch them. Are there any ways to deter mongoose? Which part of the big island do you live? My parents would often go to Kapoho and my brother’s currently in Hilo on orders. I’ve never been there, but would like to someday after Covid blows over. I hear it’s very beautiful :]
Welcome to BYC!Hi everyone! I haven’t picked up any chicks yet, but I’m currently on a local hatchery’s waiting list. This will be my first time so figured I’d educate myself as much as possible and try to get some tips before I get my girlies :]

Detering mongoose: Friends have big dogs they keep outside during the day, that seems to help (ours our small house dogs and rather useless...) A local breeder sets traps, though he has over 100 chickens and poultry is his business. I let my birds free range for a short time if I am standing right there to watch them. Investing in a chicken tractor as well, so they can get out and change the scenery. Luckily mongoose are generally afraid of people!![]()
