Aloha!
My name is Lauren and my partner and I are looking after two wonderful little hen babes that wandered into our backyard this past August at about 2-3 months old. We had been talking about getting hens for a while, but didn’t feel it was the right time. Low and behold, Jelly and Bean scuttled across the yard one day and haven’t left since! Jelly looks more like a golden comet while bean looks more like a Brown chicken of some sort. They are BFFs, always cuddling and never more than a few feet apart from each other. It’s the biggest delight of our lives getting to know these little trouble makers.
During our time with them, we’ve learned a lot about what to feed chickens (we hand blend and sprout our own feed). We have learned what insect treats they like in the yard (keep your fingers clear when there are scarab beetle grubs around!). They love helping us plant things in the garden, and Jelly especially loves when I clean out the worm bin.
I’ve learned a lot from this site already, so I thought it would be fun to start contributing and engaging. Thanks so much for being apart of this community. It has been a lifeline to us in times of uncertainty as new chicken caretakers.
