Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Please feel free to ask any questions.

Good luck with all your chicks! Be sure to check for pasty butt when they first arrive, give them water and keep them warm. Remember, they grow super fast so either have a huge brooder ready or have others on hand for when they grow.

Be sure to check out our learning center also.

Aloha and welcome to BYC! That's a lot of very good layers you've ordered. You're going to have loads of eggs if they can survive the mongooses. I don't know how bad the mongooses are on Kauai (I've only visited on the island a couple of times), but the mongooses were so bad when I raised chickens on the big island that it was impossible to free range them without eventually loosing your entire flock. I had to build runs for them completely covered top and bottom (and underneath as we'll) with 1/2 in. Hardware cloth. Some of the wild game chickens that run around everywhere have the alertness, speed, and instinct to thrive in spite of the mongooses, but egg laying hatchery breeds just can't do it. I hope things are better on Kauai. Good luck with da flock, Bruddah!

Congrats on the soon to be new chicks! I hope they make it to you safely. You have been given some great advice above here, so I will just welcome you to our flock!

It's likely only a matter of time until they become well established on Kauai as well. Mongooses are not all bad. Hawaii has no snakes, and likely no invading snake species will ever get established in the islands (like they have in Guam), because of the mongooses which are great snake killers, but unfortunately mongooses have wiped out a number of native species of Hawaii birds and make it tough on chicken owners who would like to free range their birds.
