Aloha!

Hi neighbor. What town are you in. I suggest getting more than you think you want. Honestly. I do think 6 is not too many. Sadly, if you get 2 and 1 passes for whatever reason you’re going to need to get it a new friend. Then you need to do a 3 week to 30 day quarantine, then introductions... it’s not the easiest. Go see Wayne Meyer at Long Island Poultry in riverhead. Also join Long Island Chicken keepers on facebook. Very helpful. Good luck!

Hey there! I noticed your username and saw that you were on the island so I followed you just in case! I'm located in Huntington Village. I was checking out a place called Mother Earth Nursery in East Northport who had some baby chicks. They were willing to give us four chicks instead of six.

I recently showed my grandmother silkie chickens and she fell in love with their fluffyness and looks. I just contacted Long Island Poultry - I did see that they recently got some chicks and they also got silkie chicks. We may get one silkie and then two different breeds who are similiar in personality but lay more eggs.

Thank you for commenting and if I have any questions, I'll see if I can send you a message!

Hi!:frowWelcome to BYC! I understand having 3 chicks at a minimum, but I had no idea any state required you start with 6. Why would the state even have a law like that? Good grief. I hope you are able to rehome a few chicks and all works well for you. BTW, I have 3 coops. My husband built the first and second ones, one built for 8 chickens and the other for 4. Then I needed another one to introduce 3 new chicks and I bought a prefab. (I couldn't bear to ask him to build another one) Well, it has been 2 years and the prefab is falling apart. Now we are planning on building a new coop again, but this time a large walk in for all the chickens. LOL Just thought I'd share a little chicken math with you. These little birds are so much fun, and one way or another the flock always seems to grow. Have fun!

Question: Is it NY law to have six chickens or is that the minimum the store is willing to sell? The first sounds kinda odd. I've seen stores with this minimum a lot. In the latter case, one way to handle it is to join up with another chicken owner from your area and split a purchase. You each pick the breeds you want as part of the purchase.

I have 3 for my backyard and had to find a way around the 6-bird minimum as well. I'll also recommend 3 minimum for your flock if possible.

NYS law for 6 minimum is when you pick them up. You can buy less and have them shipped. Some private breeders will allow you to buy less.

You can purchase less if they are over 8 weeks or 2 months. Can’t remember the exact wording. Most places will sell you less than 6 if you already have an established flock. Here every town is different. So say 6 hens no Roos, some don’t allow them at all, my town minutes away is 15 to every 500 sq ft. It’s crazy how different they are. Not sure about Huntington village.
