So I finally moved into a house with a nice yard and I am almost ready to add chickens! I have been wanting to for years, but living in a condo prevented that from happening.
I have a nice yard with a huge mango tree, plenty of shade, 6 foot tall fence for most of the yard and nothing behind my house except a mountain.
I live on Oahu and chickens are everywhere here it seems. Weather is perfect year round, it is paradise after all. I am to the point of deciding on a coop for the chickens. Probably 3 or 4 chickens, mostly free range.
I look forward to learning more before I do anything else!

Aloha, and welcome to BYC, Jerry. Glad you decided join our flock. I live on Oahu as well. I suppose everyone has their own individual thermostat, but it's been hot and humid at our place this week (especially the past couple of days). You're right; there are choke feral game chickens everywhere here. They are extremely hardy and excellent brooders and mothers, but poor layers, so I don't bother with catching and keeping them. I have only high yield layers in my flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck wi da coop and da flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I envy your area where you live. It just sounds so perfect! I've always wanted to visit Hawaii.

Glad you have joined us.

Good luck with your plans and getting your first flock.

Sounds like you have the perfect place for them.

Thanks all for the welcome.
I am adding a pic of where I will add my chicken run.
I will have a coop in the back and use chicken wire to cover the wood fence and go over the top. Then bring it in and create a door to walk in. Probably about 12 feet out and it is almost 5 feet wide.

Thanks for posting the pic. Your run is looking very nice. I would strongly recommend using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire to prevent rats and possibly even mongooses as well from getting into your coop. It's more expensive but it will save you money in feed (and possibly chickens as well) in the long run. Good luck in finishing your run.

Here is my run with the coop in it. And also my 7 chicks. I went to get 4 and the guy gave me more for free. He had too many!

I also plan to free range them in my yard when I am home.
