When will I be able to tell what my blue Cochin and black Silk are male or female..

I don't know about sexing cochins but, silkies are probably one of the hardest breeds to sex young. Generally they are 4-5 mos. of age before you can sex them, some are even more difficult and it is not till they lay or crow that you know for certain. They are a breed I advise people to buy as older birds, point of lay pullets, because you can end up with a bunch of cockerels otherwise

You may want to ask at "Silkie thread," which is the longest running of several silkie threads. My friend has had silkies for more than 25 years and still got "fooled" by "stealth" roosters, including her most recent acquisition at 5 mos. of age. She has kept them regardless of it being prohibited in her residential setting.

Hi and welcome to our flock!

So glad you could join BYC! You should be able to sex your Cochin by the time it is 8 weeks old or so. Sometimes you can tell when they are as young as 4 weeks. Males will quickly develop large red combs and wattles. They may also feather in slower and have a taller stance.

Silkies are much harder to sex. You probably won't be sure on its sex until it is 5 months old. You may be able to begin guessing at 8 weeks, but it is very hard to tell.

Good luck with your Silkie and Cochin! Both breeds have such wonderful temperaments. I've kept some bantam Cochins before and they were so sweet and entertaining.
