I just discovered this forum after already posting in the coop and run area. Some of this may be redundant to that thread, but here goes:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Not even new yet. Getting our pullets on Friday. In Sacramento, we can only have hens, so I wanted them old enough to sex. I'm getting them from a high schooler in a nearby rural town. If he gets the sex wrong, I can return the rooster, but I'm hoping he knows what he's doing!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
3 is the max we can have and 3 it shall be.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I'm leaning toward Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, and not sure the other. Will let you know as soon as I know!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, so having a little flock is a bit of a progression from that. I love trying new recipes that are healthy and tasty. My boyfriend and I hike pretty regularly and we love road trips (lots of good places to go in Northern California. I'm addicted to the VRBO website and it's a great source of dog-friendly places to stay).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My family consists of me, my boyfriend, an 18 year old kitty, a 12 year old German Shepherd mix, a 3 year old Chiweenie and a 2 1/2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. I'm pretty sure with three hens, we'll officially be animal hoarders. All the dogs are from rescues or shelters, so when our local SPCA starting advertising hens to adopt, I quickly became obsessed. I knew I needed chickens. My first plan was to adopt, since that's my natural inclination with animals, but with only three hens allowed, I rethought that. We'd love to retire/semi-retire to a more rural area some day, and then maybe I can help with adopting some rescues. Our fantasy is to have a few friendly goats, more chickens and maybe grow some crops we can make a little money off of. Hops would be our first choice. That fantasy, however, is a good 10-15 years away.
Currently, I'm the director of administration for a nonprofit foundation 4 days a week, and I do contract from home on Fridays for a couple small nonprofits.
Below is our coop and run. I'd like to say I made it, but we are swamped with home projects at the moment, and I was impatient about getting started. I found a gentleman on Craigslist to make it to order, though we're having to tweak it a little because I didn't consider everything. I also need to "cute it up" with some landscaping, and have added decorative solar lights already. I also want to add a small weathervane, so if anyone has a source, let me know! We live in an old urban neighborhood, but we have a cow weathervane on our house (only viewable from the back yard). My boyfriend grew up on a farm, and I have farm roots, so although we love our urban lifestyle, we also enjoy a little "country" at home. The girls will fit in perfectly!

and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your soon to be flock! Neat little coop, sounds like it will be really decorative when you get done!
