Alright, how do you pronounce Cochin?

Alright i feel really stupid now.. I was telling another chicken lover about my differnt breeds of chickens and i came acrost Cochin and i always say it like it is spelled but i know some people think coach-in is the correct way to say it. I said Cochin and she was like what? She then found out i meant Coach-in and amediatly knew what i ment

The problem arises, of course, because it looks French, but it's Asian. And actually it's both, since the Cochin region originated as part of French Indo-China. Like any word, it's going to have regional variations, but Merriam-Webster will give you the correct American English pronunciation (like coach- in) or use the OED for British English.

I'm so glad I found this thread, because I've been saying it ALL WRONG!

And said it to another major backyard chicken lady here no less. If she knew I was wrong (which I'm sure she did) she very politely didn't say anything which was very sweet of her. Now to practice the correct pronunciation! Thanks for this thread!

definately Coach-in. Sometimes when I say it in a hurry it comes out Co-shin but that's just the accent coming out not the real pronunciation
