Dh and I were on a no flour, no sugar diet several years ago. Dh loved it, he lost thirty pounds, I only lost about ten then stayed there no matter what I did. Well, DH wants to go back on it again. We did eat very well and saved a bunch of money.
Dh is not a bread person, I am. I love my bread, and miss it when on that diet. I still make all the goodies that I usually make, I just have to alter the recipes a bit. DGD has sanwiches for lunch every school day, if I make bread for her , I WILL eat some now and then.

I am trying to find online resources for alternative flours. We will be able to use any corn flours, any brown rice flours, flax, oat, soy, buckwheat, chickpea, quinoa, and any nut flour/meal. I have found places for a few of these, but can only get them in like 1-2lb. bags. With using these instead of flour for baking, I would use that amount up very quickly. I am looking for 5-10lb.bags/containers.

I am also looking for a source for 5lb. containers of wild rice, I can only find them in 1lb.

1. Look for a restaurant supply. They should have it in bulk amounts.
2. Also check the local bakery, They may order a 10 or 25lb sack for you.
3. Buy the grain and grind it yourself. I have a VitaMix 5000 (souped up blender) that will grind grain about three cups at a time in about 2 min.

I have used these people. The shipping shouldn't be too awful to CA:

Many people can tolerate Emmer who have wheat allergies or reactions to it.

Secondly, you can grow all the grain you could eat in a year on 1/4 acre of land. This can all be done by hand if you're willing to put in the time. Since grain is a grass, it's not much work, except for harvesting.

I'm serious. You CAN do it.

I would love a vitamix, but we cannot afford one. I have thought about looking into grinding my own grain.

Thanks for the website, I will check it out.
We have TONS of rabbits, gophers, moles, ground squirrels. Would they bother the grains? We have 5 acres, so the space is there, for now. We had thought about growing some alfalfa/hay in a couple of years when we get our horses/ donkey's etc.

There is an attachment for your kitchenaid as well which will grind grain into flour.

I believe that the rabbits would eat your grain crop to some extent (all grain is like a grass until it gets high enough to form the seed heads). But I also think in the overall balance of things, the grain would grow faster than any one creature could keep it 'mowed'. Justs plant extra and expect the rabbits will get some.

Also, you could consider simply growing a grain crop to let your birds into to harvest on their owns. It would keep them busy for months. Wheat, Rye, Oats, Barley, field peas can all be grown very easily on a small scale.
