alternative for roost boards

thank you, everyone, for your input. I do appreciate it. In response to a couple of points made, I do want to add the following:

1. As per the current roost boards being uncomfortable, the ones I am using are 2X4, broad side up, and I have some 1X2s for the BBRed trio and the younger guineas. The adult full size birds don't seem to prefer the 2X4 over the narrower ones; they will go to either size of those if they don't get to the top of the doghouse first.

2. As for construction of the table tops, there is no particle board used in the ones I'm referring to. I'm not talking about the older, HEAVY brown woodgrain look 8' long tables. I'm referring to the new, MUCH lighter white or grey flecked tables that range in length from 4' to 8', some fold in the middle for easy storage, some don't, but these are all solid construction with no veneer to wear through.

3. The first year I had any chickens, I put a flat heated panel bed designed for large dogs in the house for them to sit/roost on. (At the time I only had 5 chickens, and they all fit on top of it quite easily). VERY seldom did anyone poop on the center surface; they would almost always back up to the edge to drop their stuff; thus the center usually stayed fairly clean. I'm thinking maybe they'd do the same with the tables... If I put newspaper down daily, I could just gather the papers in the morning, put down fresh paper, and put the old paper in the compost pile.

(now, is this making any more sense?
