One of my hens has to stay indoors for a few weeks while recovering from surgery. She’s currently set up in a spare room where I put a tarp down and covered it with pine shavings. The problem is the shavings stick to our socks and clothing and tracks everywhere! I could sweep multiple times a day and they are still around. I’ve seen at the pet store some small animal bedding that’s either made from shredded cardboard/paper type material or a soft cotton like material. All claim to be safe for small animals but say nothing about birds. There are unscented and due free ones. Has anyone used any small animal bedding for their chicks or adult chickens that they would recommend??

I use shavings in the cage, but place the cage on a tarp, then bring the edges of the tarp up to wrap the sides of the cage about 8" up. In this way 99% of the shavings are contained.

For short term confinement, I put an old towel on the cage floor then cover those with paper towels. I can change out the paper towels as needed.
