Am I allowed to have chickens?!

We really want a chicken coop! How do I check my town ordinance? I suspect where we live won't allow backyard chickens. How do I find out for sure? What if I put a collar on them and call it a pet? Anyone have success with changing their town ordinances?

City or Town hall would know for sure. That's what I had to do.
