in the summer we give the chickens the left over cobs and also friends bring some over. we also grew corn for them and when they are husked that goes to the goats. the field behind us has wheat every other yr and they don't cut down 6ft all around because it has wild garlic in it so they let us go out and get what we could, it was done by hand and was very hard to do but i got a months worth so that saved me money. we also know a guy that works at the towns mill and we get 25lbs of feed from him once a month for free. we grew some sunflowers that they are still enjoying. we are going to do a small garden just for the chickens so i believe we are doing all we can to feed them as natural as possible. i also get free apples for the chickens and goats. we have 17 hens and we average 14 eggs a day. this is our first time having chickens so i am still learning, i also think there is something i could do better, any suggestions? or am i doing fine

Wow...that's a lot of work!

No way my peope would let me do that.
The best indicator of how well you're doing is your chickens. If they have enough cover on their bones, if their combs are healthy and red, etc. If you can, letting your chickens free range covers a lot of their needs, allowing them to scratch for bugs, etc. Obviously, they need good water too.
Good job!

when i am home we go out 3x for the water otherwise right now it would just freeze on them, i also give them a mix of layer mash and wheat and cracked corn. we haven't let them out much lately because of the weather but we will, the combs on all of them are good nice and red.

If you're getting 14 eggs a day from 17 hens on a regular basis I'd say you're doing just fine.
