Yes! That is my idea, because when I put ice in my waterer it melts so fast, I constantly have to go change it.

Ice will melt quickly in water. By using a frozen water bottle, it won't melt nearly as fast so it will keep the water cool for longer.

Aaah... the bigger the bottle, the longer it lasts. Also keeping the buckets in the shade helps too.

We also have shallow trays of water for them to cool themselves (in the shade) and they drink from those too.

Those terra cotta saucers are the absolute best for this. Only thing I hate is splashing their gross poopy water all over myself when it's time to freshen it.

Yeah, we're in the desert so we deal with the heat for half the year. It's reading 112F right now and expected to be the same all week.

We run misters too when it gets over 105. In fact, the wading saucers aren't used until then either. If we use them when it's below 105, then they'll get too spoiled and won't be able to handle it when it gets as hot as it is this week.

How do you keep your coop and water cool?

It's a challenge!

The "coop" is open and airy within the chicken run. So it isn't "cooped up."

For the water we use those 5 gallon buckets in the shade and put ice bottles in them. But the chickens also drink from their wading saucers. Those stay cooler because they're in the shade and not closed like the lidded buckets.

I once tested the closed bucket water without the ice bottles and the temp read 127F! Ouch!

We haven't lost any chickens to the heat. Though from what I've seen on local FB pages, it is not all that unusual for people here to lose a couple to the heat each summer. Those that do lose chickens, typically didn't have adequate shade or wading pools. Chickens cool themselves most efficiently through their feet.

Cold watermelon is a good cooling treat too.
