Ok here is what i was told to do when it comes to feeding but the more i read the more i wonder. I was told not to over feed my chickens has they will get fat and not lay eggs... When i first moved into the house the two ladies only free ranged the yard, and got the occassional food scraps. I bought some food and feed them about a cup a day. As you can see by the pics, this is what I got. I had to take someones word for it since I am in Italy, they wrote down what they get for their chickens and I gave it to the guy at the feed store. The first pic is whatI feed them the most with just a sprinkle of the nutriants (second pic). Opinions?

Quote: Adult birds need about 1/4 lb per day.
The best way to feed them is let them have all they want, all the time
Whoeever gave you that advice is incorrect

x2 You can't really overfeed most chickens. If you are raising a meat specific-breed like a cornish-x then that is a different story but those birds are the exception not the rule. Generally food is left 24/7 for chickens and they are good at regulating themselves. Plan on 1/4 of feed per bird per day.

It is hard to tell but the picture looks like scratch. It is mostly just corn bits? If so that is not chicken feed it is just a corn-based snack and they should only get a handful or so of that a day. They will need a poultry feed that has the protein and calcium needed for their bodies to make eggs. I wish I knew some Italian for you but I don't. Do you have a pic of the tag? I could try to help you translate it online and see what it is and determine what you need to look for if it is not right?

Good luck!

Good to know thanks. I figured if they were not hungry. They wouldn't eat!! I think i am going to use a feeder in the run, if i can keep it dry.
Can you tell by looking at the feed if I am using the right stuff. And what should the ratio be?

Quote: There should be either a tag, or printing on the bag, that tells you the ingredients and all the nutrient levels
It looks like a generic type of bag, so most likely it will be a tag sewn onto the end.
For layers it should be around 15% protein

If it's missing, you can either go to where you bought it and ask to see other bags with the tag intact, or you may be able to fiind it on their website:
