Ok so help me out. According to the general chick sexing knowledge I have two of four chicks I ordered that were supposed to be pullets that look suspiciously rooish. My Easter eager has drab brown and black striped wings and tail but three distinct rows on its pea comb. My speckled Sussex has no tail at all. Only wing feathers and a few sparse back and chest feathers along with very thick legs.

It's probably too soon to tell but man, I wanted hens! I guess I just keep waiting and seeing.

Well, once they get into their feathers you can tell. Look at the hackle ( neck) feathers. If they are rounded at the ends, they are female (pullets). If they are pointed at the ends, they are male. (cockerels) Don't worry if you have extra males. Just check Craigslist. There are multiple folk out there looking for guardians for their free range flocks. Or just extra chickens for their farms. Easy to rehome them.
For extra females ...it's getting into the latter part of summer and folks growing out quality chicks will soon be downsizing for overwintering. Check the breeder's lists and BYC selling section for started birds in the breeds you want. Also check the BYC thread for your own State and see what's available in started birds. They cost a but more but much cheaper than if your raised them out to that age yourself.

Best,
Karen
