Hi
I think I have a deadbeat chicken
I have 3 Buff Orpington, 3 Australorp and 3 Barred Rock. I'm feeding scratch and layer formula feeds with plenty of free space for the birds with a nice roost and 6 nesting boxes. So I have 9 birds but some days I get 5 eggs and some days 6or7 but never 8 or9. Am I getting about the right production?

I think that would be about normal. I think all of those breeds lay average 4-5 eggs per week. So you with 9 hens, you would be getting 36-45 eggs per week. That averages to between 5-6 eggs per day.

It is also dependant on the weather. If it's really hot where you are, they may lay a little less. A good thing though is that your breeds should all lay well in the winter, and in spring you should see an increase in the number of eggs.
