ok so one or more of my hens has started (in the last week) digging what appears to be nests in the bedding on the floor of the coop... looks just like a nest would (if you can picture that)... they just turned 4 months old so I haven't put the nest boxes in yet...should I??? and these little "nest" are not them digging like they have been doing for months out in the run... once again this just started up about a week ago...any ideas???

My first started laying at 18 weeks, which is 4 months. At almost 21 weeks I have 3 pullets out of 20 laying. I'd suggest you put the nest boxes in with fake eggs. You might get an egg tomorrow or it may take a few more weeks.

That sounds like nesting behavior. You'll also start seeing deepening of the red of their combs, faces, and wattles as they get close to coming into lay.

Get the fake eggs or golf balls in your nesting boxes, and watch to see if they've been in there moving them around.

Yeah none of them have "deep red" combs or wattles but I'm gonna put the boxes in and let them have at it...
