The guidline is 10 square feet run area per bird. The concerns about the coop size are understandable if they are restricted to being in there for more than just overnight, but if the run is covered and available to them all day, they should be fine. I have found that no mater how many chickens I have in the coop at night, they all roost as close together as they can, leaving half the roost space un-used. 
And they are chickens. If they have never free ranged, they don't really have the capacity to wonder what it would be like, or wish that they could. They will be happy with a safe, clean coop and some treats. Enjoy your chicken adventure!
