I have a 14 month Light Brahma Roo. I have had wonderful advice from the folks here and Shadrach’s fantastic rooster article.

I have raised him from a chick. We had two roos and he was the winner for how kind he was to not only the girls, but to us, our dog, and now his 2 offspring.

However, even though he’s a late bloomer and we have tried everything to make it work. He’s simply too big for the girls. He can get a little too rough with them and his size compared to the girls is making it dangerous. Most of the 12 hens are terrified of him only 2 actually like him. It breaks my heart , but we think a pet only home is our best option at this point.

Am I making the right call?

Good roosters can be hard to come by. You've made the right decision even if it might be hard to do. Rehoming him is the best option for every reason you've said. If your hens are terrified of him then rehoming is best. It is a hard decision but again, you are making the right one.
Thank you for the kind words. It’s so hard :(

Of course! I've had my fair share of mean and aggressive roosters over the years so I know the feeling of finally having a rooster that is nice to everyone. Again, it sucks and super hard to have to let go of good roosters but sometimes it has to be done. I hope you find a perfect new home for him

It’s hard because we know they are just doing what they are made to do. Getting over rooberty is hard, but when he’s ripping girls backs to pieces and ripping out feathers, attacking them from behind, I’m thinking, “this doesn’t seem fair to the girls.” I’m sorry you have had to go through this as well. Thank you again!

You are most definitely making the right call. You're poor girls have to live with that guy and have to face the him every day. Good job I know it's hard but you are doing the right thing:hugs

Absolutely and it is not fair to your hens to be terrified of your rooster. Both of mine can be aggressive at times with the girls but are great 99% of the time

Thank you :) it’s hard because the 75% of the time he’s good, but the fact remains some are so scared of him and he’s not kind to them :(
