I have a buff O Roo I kept that was supposed to be a pullet, and thought I’d give it a chance. He’s 1 yr 2 months old. I love him. We had a come to Jesus moment around 13 months where I let him flog me until he stopped, so we’re good now. He was protecting the hens and I had to handle one. I wasn’t up for his poop that day. Since then he’s always been pretty cool. The bruises are gone lol.
Anyway, he started over mating 3 of the girls. I have 8 for him. 3 older and 5 younger. I bought saddles. Dressed the girls out. But they’d rubbed. I wasn’t happy about that. Ended up getting wing guards. But it just got worse. So I made a separate enclosure for him and he’s not with the girls. It’s been a month 2/3 girls are slooooooowly recovering. The third I kept everything on because she was so bad. I upped protein.
Here’s my dilemmas
#1 He’s a great boy, he’s just the best protector and saved the flock from a neighborhood dog. Still in awe of how this came down. We almost lost one. But big boy took charge.
#2 I don’t want my girls overmated ever again. He only did this to 3/8 this was awful.
#3 He hates not having access to the girls. He seems stressed… but acclimating.
#4 his britches are so fluffy he can’t fertilize my other buff o females
Rehoming him where he can free range is the best option. He doesnt deserve to be culled.
What on earth do I do? He’s beautiful and a great fella. He can be a jerk. But not to me. Plus I like his jerky side because it kept the babes safe.
Also note…I’m rearing up a welsummer cockerel that’s so sweet too, and I also have a silkie roo.
I have to approach from a farm mindset. I want to focus on the welsummers. But my roo is loved and a cool dude. I won’t have enough space for both big boys…..
