... that wonders if their chickens get fed enough? They crap non-stop but always act like they haven't eaten in, you know, the last 15 minutes. Please tell me they are eating enough. Thanks.
Do you leave their food out all the time? My little 15 week old RIRs have the food out always so that they can eat all they want - and they eat a lot!. Yet they gobble up treats like they haven't eaten for days. I think they are just eating & pooping machines!
If you have food out for them and they still act that way, it's called being spoiled rotten.
My chickens are like that- I can dump two different kinds of treats on the ground, come back an hour later, and they whine at me for free ranging or more treats, or SOMETHING- I'm their entertainment director, apparently (quoting another BYC'er- I forget who)!!!
It's normal. I free-feed. The feeders are available and full all day. They pick at it throughout the day but if I walk to the feeders and touch them every single bird comes running from the far reaches of the property and every single one of them acts starved. I don't even have to put new food in. I can just jiggle the feeder and they act like it's suddenly the best food on earth. I must have a magical touch.
I don't have feed out for them all the time as the darn birds come and eat it.
I feed them in the morning and then again at about lunchtime, they also get bread and fruit as an afternoon treat. they do free range a fair bit too and i always worry if I am feeding them enough, there is always feed left after the morning feed and the local bird population walks around very fat!! So I guess they are having enough - but they always run when they see me coming.
