Am I the only weirdo...

They are really nice, easy-to-raise birds. I've hatched their eggs out the last two years. In fact, I've got a dozen Moyer broiler eggs in my incubator (a gift from a few Christmas's ago) as I type.
I didn’t find the cost of buying hatching eggs worth it. They want $30 per dozen when you can buy chicks for $3.50. The Royal broilers are the ones I like.

I've always felt the same way, hatching eggs from hatcheries are absolutely outrageous price-wise, especially when you figure in shipping and incubation and the possibility of poor or nonexistent hatches. Much better to get chicks, at least those are a fairly sure thing.

The reason I buy eggs is because the postal service in my neck of the woods is so prone to delays. 3+ day ships are the rule, rather than the exceptions, and nothing is more depressing then opening a box to find dead and dying chicks. Moyer's does a nice job packing their eggs and in my last go-around I had 10 of 12 hatch. Plus, I find raising chicks from day 1 with access to food, water and the outside yields very healthy and hardy chicks. Since, I save a hen or 2 to breed for second generation meat birds, I don't feel bad about paying a little more to get exactly the type of broiler I want.
