Chicken not food!! Somebody tell my fox.....

Hi There, I have a broody pen which is a large cage for unwanted broodies before I got my rooster.
The cage should be off the floor to let air flow under her, say on a brick at each end.
Then she needs food and a heavy water dish that cannot be tipped up by accident.
She needs to be covered at night to keep warm and keep her separate from others until she "psyches out". The cage should be in a light spot during the day , not inside in the dark.
My hens usually came out of broodiness within 2 days with exception to rhode island red who took 5 days.
I would recommend the "jackie French Chook Book"
Australia. It was my first and best book and isnt too large, You can read the book in one night., and It gives you the basics.
I have had others given to me which were too complicated and didnt relate to "Aussie Chooks"!!!
so I can see what you mean with the time factor, you may have been misunderstood, anyhow I hope you can wait for moult to finish. Are their legs nice and smooth???Could help with age id.

I've never heard of aging a chicken by the legs. What if they have scaley leg mite?

I have heard old timers say to look at the skin and see if there is any yellow fat. Yellowish tint. Thats a stewin hen. Although I put that right up there with "Don't hold scizzors on Sunday or you'll get whooped all week" as well as the other hundred old wives tales.

There may be some truth to it but I'm not convinced yet.

i know, i'm going off topic, but....

chickens have beaks and they're omnivores...they eat frogs, mice, snakes, other chickens.....so i really don't understand your point. if we were more intelligent than the average chicken, we wouldn't have war...or fight with each other on a chicken board about chickens as food or pets. they can be both.

c'mon, be nice. respect each other's opinions. chickens were first domesticated to be eaten. if you want to have them as pets, great, some of mine are pets and there is no way i would eat or much less sell them. but understand that not all people on this site are gonna feel the same way.

please understand that there are many people on this site searching for chicken answers for many different reasons including how to properly raise chickens for food consumption. i'd hate for them to stop posting when they may have very insightful answers to some of our questions.

btw, bantymum, great post.

thank you someone needs to put a stop to this madness. I really expected the moderators to step in this morning. I really didn't want to add to this madness but had to say...thank you. I brag to everyone how this is the nicest site and the politest people but alas, this morning it got out of hand.

i do admit that what i posted on this thread was uncalled for, but on the post of mine that is titled
---Can i have a vote---i clearly respect others desicions and beliefs, i just think that it is wrong to think that because chickens were origanally bred for food that means that they ALWAYS have to be food, any street drugs turn into medisines and vise versersa but i don't think that since there are less vegetarians/vegan that it is thought that are opinions are invalid,
