Hi all,

I have gotten 2 years ago an additional box with chicks from an old (literally) friend. One of the chicks is this good looking guy. I have had now several eggs incubate from him and all chicks made it fabulously. The youngs chicks are definitely stronger than other kinds I have. This rooster is one from the old books: Every morning he sits on the top of the barn, crowing the neighbours awake. The strangest thing however is his character.

1) He is SOO easy going. Not aggressive or protective to any people around (he drives with me on the tractor/Gator/Wheelbarrow or whatsoever, but I have never hand fed him while growing up)
2) He protects new and specially younger chicks for his own crew, if the oldies are trying to make a statement to the young ones, if I mix younger chicks in the group. (he protects the new ones with his life, which makes it so easy for me!)
3) And he even attacked a Hawk, who made a dive trying to get a chick from the ground. (which was spectacular)

(if another rooster is trying to get a hold of his chicks, he does attack other roosters, but only than)

So, anybody knows what Label this King of the Clan is?

Short video of him: https://goo.gl/HCBCSl

Thnx

Wow, he is amazing! I don't know, but I hope someone on here does!! The behavior is not that unusual. We've had several roosters that look after the chicks, and will protect chickens lower in the pecking order. Our peacocks and peahens will do this, too, for the chickens. And we have never had a mean rooster. But your rooster's color and pattern is stunning. I have never seen anything like that!

Yes me too. I decided to post it here and ask. I have 40+ chickens and have an average understanding of breeds, but I can not localize this one. There was a guy stopping buy a while ago and wanted to give me $100 if I wanted to sell him. (which i didn't of course) But I didn't thought anything about it. I would love to know which breed it is, so I can get some same breed chicks for him.
BTW, as you see: The color linings are pretty sharp distinguished. Maybe it's just a Barnyard mix?! (butty a pretty one)

Thnx for responding,
Marty

He's what I consider a good rooster. I don't keep the other kind, nor tolerate aggression in my birds.

He looks to be a mix, possibly Easter egger, or Americana and maybe some buff Orpington, but I'm just guessing at it. He's gorgeous, and definitely a keeper.

If you are lucky, even if he is a mixed breed, he will pass on those gorgeous colors and markings and temperament. I had a rooster recently who was absolutely beautiful and produced many sons and daughters identical to him over the years. And he was just a mutt. But it didn't matter, If I had wanted to mess with all that is necessary to establish a new breed, I probably could have.

Yeah, cool rooster. If I were to tale a stab at breeds im his mixture, I would say wyondotte for his comb and what looks like faint lacing on his stomach and Orpington for his white skin. Also, he has a similar build to both of tthe above. What else, I don't know.

Yeah, Thank you all for the replies. I have seen also several mixes in him. I have had several offspring with the same color setting and colors. Which seemed very steady and exactly the same pattern and that was also one of the reasons that I doubted if it was a certain "kind" and not a mix. But I guess you're all right and have to believe it's a mix and not a forgotten or old breed...
When you go over all the breeds out there, you see many characteristics of many... But nothing like it. Maybe I will start breeding a little more focused with him. (he is part of the free roamers, and not locked up) Again, Thank you all! If there would be out of the blue a recognition out there, please let me know!

Kr, Marty

What an AWESOME BIRD!!! ....personality, color & type, His posture is stunning and looks to have a good width betw nice straight legs. If he was mine i'd try some line-breeding to try and fix those characteristics in my flock. I could envision him with a group of hens feathered like his breast feathers - are some of his female offspring like that? Thanks for the pics, I come to BYC for a "rooster fix" when i'm missing the boys i had to re-home bc i live in town. One of them had that same ability to keep the peace, even at a young age, both were lucky to get "jobs" as flock roos.
